Alumni Excellence Award

Shona Reilly is a dedicated champion for Alberta businesses, known for her ability to build relationships and open doors for others. As director of trade at Calgary Economic Development, the programs and initiatives she leads have supported more than 200 companies in securing over $100 million in trade revenue over the past five years.
Shona launched the Trade Accelerator Program in Calgary and expanded it across the province, giving businesses the tools, connections and knowledge to grow internationally. She also played a key role in securing a $2.6-million grant to develop Level Up Alberta, a province wide initiative designed to help companies scale, export and compete globally. More than half of the 1,000 small and medium-sized enterprises she supports come from underrepresented communities—a reflection of her deep commitment to inclusive economic growth and expanding access to opportunity.
Shona’s impact reaches far beyond her professional role. For the past 13 years, she has served in the Canadian Armed Forces Naval Reserves, teaching and mentoring youth in the Cadet program. Her dedication earned her the Canadian Forces’ Decoration, recognizing her long and exemplary service. She also volunteers on a committee within the Calgary Stampede’s communications team and mentors emerging professionals through Calgary Economic Development. The throughline of Shona’s work is clear: she shares her knowledge generously, builds meaningful relationships and helps others develop the confidence to lead. She approaches every role with integrity and an unwavering belief in community.
Bow Valley College was the catalyst for Shona’s career. The College’s focus on work-integrated learning equipped her with tangible skills and industry connections. By the time she graduated, she was prepared to enter the workforce with confidence.
